Kharbandi Goenpa

A monastery on the hill above Phuntsholing, founded in 1967 by the Royal Grandmother, with wide views over the plains of India.

The story

Ashi Phuntsho Choden, the Royal Grandmother, founded it in 1967 as her winter residence. It holds temples, a large statue of the Buddha and a Zangdopelri shrine.

Before you go

It sits just below the highway to Thimphu, so it is an easy stop on the way up from the border.
