Centenary Farmers Market

Thimphu's big market by the river, opened in 2008. Chillies, red rice, dried cheese and everything else Bhutan cooks with.

The story

The market opened in 2008, the year Bhutan marked 100 years of the Wangchuck kings, so farmers from the valleys could sell straight to the town. It was renovated from 2022 and reopened in 2023. During the work the stalls moved across the road.

Look for

Strings of dried chillies, hard dried cheese, red rice, fern tips in season and incense. Cross the footbridge behind the market, the Kundeyling Bazam, to the clothes and handicraft stalls on the far bank.

Before you go

It is busiest from Friday to Sunday. Bring cash in small notes.
