National Memorial Chorten

The white stupa in the middle of Thimphu, built in 1974 in memory of the Third King. People walk round it from dawn to dusk.

The story

Ashi Phuntsho Choden, the Third King's mother, built it in 1974 in memory of her son, who died in 1972. It was designed by Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche and consecrated by Dudjom Rinpoche.

Why it matters

The building is not really the point. The people are. Elders walk round it clockwise all day, turning the big prayer wheels, counting beads and meeting friends. It is the easiest place in Bhutan to see faith as part of ordinary life.

Before you go

Come early in the morning or near sunset. Walk with the crowd, always clockwise, then sit on a bench and watch.
