Ogyen Choling

An old manor at the top of the Tang valley, now a museum of how a noble Bhutanese household lived.

The story

The family that owns it descends from the 14th-century treasure revealer Dorje Lingpa. Most of the buildings were rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1897. In 2001 the family opened the central tower as a museum, one of the first private museums in Bhutan, and it now fills 23 rooms over four floors.

Look for

The everyday things of a great house: kitchen, stores, arms and religious objects, among them a book of divination and a dance costume made of bone.

Before you go

It is a rough drive from Jakar, so make a day of it with the Burning Lake on the way. Your guide arranges the visit, as the museum keeps no fixed hours.
